Pearl Q-Popper Timbale Snare

Despite having a name like the latest designer street drug, the Q-Popper is actually a timbale/snare hybrid and part of the Marc Quinones signature series.

It matches the signature timbales perfectly with the same heavy, polished steel 12” x 5” shell and speckled grey powder coat fittings, although it has conventional drum key tuning bolts.

The underside features a 12-strand snare wire so the drum can be used as a snare drum with the snares on, or a timbale with the snares turned off.

What I did was attach it to a cymbal stand on my drum kit via the new and excellent PPS-36 angled post adaptor, and used it mainly as a second snare in a drum kit set up. Situated to the left of the hi-hat with the kit’s main snare to the right of the hi-hat it was easy to incorporate the Q-Popper’s cutting metallic sound into drum kit rhythms, which was great fun and very rewarding musically because it enabled me to introduce great variety into the beat. Rolls and fills sounded fantastic on the Popper, and because the head was cranked really tight the response was awesome. Snap, plenty of crack and oodles of pop!

But the aural possibilities don’t end there because as mentioned, you can turn the snares off and incorporate timbale fills into your rhythms, or simply use it as a standalone timbale. Simply fantastic.

Conclusion:
I love this drum. It looks great, it sounds great, and it has a great price.
